I hate the smell of mothballs so I looked for other ways to neutralize odors in my closet.  Aside from silica gels I found out that Pomanders can do the trick.  Pomanders are a natural air freshener and is very easy to make.  You can use any citrus fruit you like as well as apples.

Here’s how to do it:  Pierce the skin of the fruit using a toothpick and insert whole cloves into the holes.  Set your oven to low and bake the fruit for 1 hour, or just until it hardens.  Take it out from the oven and let cool.  Crisscross ribbons around the fruit to form a sling, then hang it in your closet.  The sweet scent of the fruit neutralizes odors and fill your closet with citrus freshness, while the aromatic oils in the cloves repel moths.  The pomander will retain its fragrance for years, so you don’t have to replace them often.
