Hanging a framed family portrait seems like an easy job, but it may leave a big crack when the plaster crumbles around the nail.  To avoid cracks, the trick is to heat the nail with a match or lighter for 5 seconds before driving it into the wall.  You may use tweezers to hold the nail if you’re afraid the flame might get too close for comfort.

Once you start hammering, the preheated metal will make the plaster flexible, so the nail will go in smoothly, leaving no cracks or chips on your pretty wall.
